Why should you care about SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is something that you are probably hearing about constantly now that you have launched your business, especially if you follow me on Facebook! It is also something that many small business owners dismiss as "too hard". "A decent website, a Facebook page... they'll find me right?" Wrong!
Times have changed rapidly and substantially. It's no longer enough to have a decent website and good word of mouth. After all, without good SEO and some clever use of keyword research your website will disappear in a long list of your competition.
So... What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, which sums it up perfectly. SEO is about using the search engine to increase the volume and quality of traffic to your site. It is a great - and free - way to advertise.
Why is SEO so Important?
SEO is important because it keeps the search results fair. ... Users trust search engines, and achieving a top spot in search engine rankings signals to searchers that your site is a credible source. The higher you rank in results pages, the more clicks and traffic your site will generate.
In a nutshell: SEO has approximately 20 times more traffic opportunity that PPC (Paid Per Click) on both mobile and desktops.
If you've ever used any form of social media, you'll agree, Google is very clever. You punch "hair care Essendon" into a search engine one time and suddenly your Facebook is full of suggested groups to join, people to follow, products to buy and services to book. Chances are that Google knows you pretty well. But it's not a mind reader, it only got to know you by the information that you gave it. It also works in reverse, a search engine can't direct traffic your way if it doesn't know where to find you.
You need to feed that hungry, nosy beast!
If you wanted to invite someone to your house you wouldn't say, "in Essendon, near the main road, next to a big tree." You might give them those details, but you'd also give them an address. SEO is the same idea, feeding the search engine details relevant to your business so that the right customers make it to your website.
So basically, SEO is about understanding your customers and populating your website in a way that means search engines will send them straight to your cyber door! Sound daunting? It won't be once we take you through the basics. Stay tuned for our blog on SEO and Keyword Research.
